Sick to death of mince pies, fat men in red suits, Noddy Holder screaming: ‘It’s Christmas’ (in a dulcet Brummie accent), fake snow, elves and all the other gubbins that make up seasonal festivities? Bah humbug! Yep, we are too…
OK that sounds pretty miserable and we’re definitely not that, honest! We love Christmas as much as the next person. After all, what’s better than chucking another log on the fire, singing mistletoe and wine in unison with Cliff and waking to find all those sparkling goodies under the tree on Christmas morn?
But when the thought of another sprout makes you nauseous, the whiff of Xmas pud is making you gag and repeats of Only Fools and Horses are clogging up your TV viewing there’s only one thing for it: plan a surf trip!
Even if you only stay local – and by local we mean Blighty – an adventure could be just what the doctor ordered. Scouring the coastline during the off season could yield surprising results. After all, ‘tis the season for ample swell and those put ins lying dormant through summer may suddenly spring to life. Who’s to say you won’t discover a sweet right point break or secluded beachy flanked by stunning back drop. The wind may be raging, and your local is anything but inviting, yet there’s always something new to discover – even on your own doorstep.
If staying home isn’t appealing then it’s time to jet off somewhere warm (er). Again, it doesn’t need to the flar flung back end of nowhere. Well-trodden Northern European spots could well deliver that much-needed shot of Vitamin D surfing goodness. Sometimes a short hop ‘darn south’ somewhere like Portugal or Morocco is all that’s needed – and these locations won’t break the bank either.
For those determined to bag themselves a tropical surfing odyssey, however, we salute you. Hitting up magazine esque line ups, with just your mates or close family in tow are just the antidote for winter blues and that Christmas/New Year hangover.
With a plethora of different locations to discover, at home or away, now’s the time to get planning and turn your New Year into a dazzler. What was the phrase used in 90s Brit surf flick Blue Juice again? Oh, yeah: ‘One life – no fear’…
