We’re not judging here, after all, everyone makes mistakes – especially when beginning something new. For those who’ve progressed beyond the ‘newbie surfer’ stage the following may ring true. If you’re still at this stage then make a note…
- Putting a wetsuit on back to front – zip at the rear peeps!
- Wearing a leash on the wrong foot – attach to your trailing ankle.
- Buying too small a (first time) surfboard – bigger is better initially.
- Thinking a shorty wetsuit is fine for January surfing in the UK – nope, it’s definitely not summer!
- Adopting surf speak after one surfing lesson – drop the Johnny Utah isms.
- Using surf speak in the wrong context e.g. ‘yeah, I stoked that last wave!’ – if you do use it, know the right way.
- Not getting a lesson – guidance is always best, especially from the experienced.
- Forgetting to apply sunscreen – looking like a lobster ain’t cool!
- Telling a member of the opposite sex you’re a pro in full earshot of your beginner surf instructor – honesty is always the best policy.
- Not enjoying yourself – this is s’posed to be fun!
If you’re thinking of learning to surf, but haven’t taken the plunge yet, here are a few reasons to (literally) jump in.
- Surfing is great for mind, body and spirit – get a dose of Vitamin D and revitalise yourself.
- Your physique will improve if you dip regularly – surfing’s a great way to lose the puppy fat.
- Having a cool hobby sets you apart – you’ll have something interesting to tell people when asked about your weekend manoeuvres.
- Making new friends is easy when you’re surfer – extend your social network.
- It’s a great way of forgetting life’s stresses and strains – an hour’s surfing makes everything appear differently after.
- The opposite sex may be more attracted to you – although there’s no guarantee!
- Surfing is (generally) safe – it’s only water after all.
- As well as enjoying Mother Ocean’s gifts you’ll tap into a great new lifestyle – surfers like to have fun, that’s for sure.
- Surfing will take you places you’d never before considered – home and way, surfing is a great excuse to travel and experience the world.
- SURFING IS FUN – do you really need any more motivation to get involved?
