Isn’t it ironic? During summer ‘hardcore’ surfers wish for autumn and winter when swells ramp up and pulse more fiercely than high season. Yet, reality bites, and after a few weeks of rain, gales, sometimes ice and snow and thick rubber the yearning for those heady days of sun and sand flood the mind quicker than a pint of Doom Bar.
There’s no question warmer temperatures – both in the water and on land – are more palatable. After all, we only endure winter surfing conditions because that’s what we’ve got. If a choice be made most of us would prefer Tropical climates over Baltic seas.
But fear not. Summer really is just around the corner. It’s already much warmer than previous weeks and months. Of course, we’re not quite out of the woods yet. Snow has been known to swing in during April! White stuff aside though we’re no doubt heading full pelt to that golden time when 2ft glassy sliders into the evening sunset atop longboards make it all worthwhile. And if you’re one who doesn’t like a mellow slide under that bright orange ball of fire then what can we say…?
Summer makes everything that little bit easier, as far as we’re concerned. And we love it at NCW. So get ready, summer surfing’s coming and that can’t happen soon enough!
