Supercharge your surfing fun this spring by switching up your gear and doing things a little differently. We’re not necessarily talking about the performance end of surfing. Although some of these suggestions do lend themselves to performance also. We’re talking more about upping the ante in terms of that fun factor and best use of conditions on the day regardless of the forecast. Guaranteeing a session if you will.
Add a paddle.
Any regular visitor to NCW’s website will know of our penchant for stand up paddle boarding. It’s possibly the easiest and most cost effective way of supercharging your surfing fun. You don’t even need to go hard board. An inflatable will do. Although if you want maximum SUP surfing performance then a hard SUP would be your best bet.
Many ‘core’ surfers will no doubt shout ‘kook’. But as winter swells start to recede a paddle board is surefire the most accessible way of improving your overall enjoyment of small and lackluster surf. It just so happens NCW does a range of SUP gear to suit all tastes which you can see here.
Add a foil.
For those looking at more challenging aspects perhaps a hydrofoil addition would be a good investment. Foiling is so much more accessible these days. It’d only take a few sessions to get those first flights above water. And just as with SUP hydrofoils open up so many more surf spots that you wouldn’t have even sniffed at previously.
Foiling is another area of watersports NCW has vested interest in, via our sister site Foilshop UK, which you should definitely check out here.
Add a nose rider.
When talking longboard surf sleds we’re not on about your common or garden 8′ performance ripper. In this instance, we’re suggesting you take it back to the old school with a traditional nose riding vehicle or glider. The board’s flat rocker, 10’+ length, magical glide and wave catching prowess is what’ll appeal to most surfers looking at more fun and time on the water.
Traditional nose riding vehicles can also be works of art, if shaped in a certain way with particular materials. And that point alone makes them worth owning.
Broadening your horizons and potentially investing in alternative surfing kit to your everyday shortboard is one way of improving your overall enjoyment of surfing this season. Take a leaf out of our book and get involved!
