Dinghy sailing isn’t a hugely covered topic at NCW. We talk about it a little, when actually we should say more. There’s a slightly tricky aspect regarding its accessibility. You have to go to a sailing school or know someone with a boat. Most families aren’t in a position to own and keep a dinghy of their own. But it’s still a worthy outdoor pursuit to check out this summer for your wee ones.
Dinghy sailing – sailing in general – is the original wind driven activity. And there’s a lot it can teach – especially for kids getting into boats or other breeze powered sports. Sailing teaches a huge amount about wind awareness. Which can be translated to complementary disciplines. It’s hard to convey just what wind awareness is to the non-initiated. Mostly, wind awareness is where you begin to intuitively know what each gust is about to do, where it’s coming from and how to handle it in your boat. The sensitivity of sails and rudders means this is learned quickly.
Yet dinghy sailing is still pretty safe. Which makes it great for young kids. With a qualified instructor, he/she will be tootling about in no time. The only real hazard is bumping heads on the boom. So the best advice is always duck! Keep your head down and you’ll be fine.
NCW wetsuits are perfectly fine for dinghy sailing. There may be a need to wear an additional layer on the bottom half, such as shorts, to help prevent abrasion. Moving about and shuffling along gunnels and sides of boats will take its toll on even the most durable of wetsuit.
Dinghy sailing is super fun for kids and doesn’t need to be hardcore. Yet it’s a great tutor for all things wind – as already said. If you’re looking for a new activity for your offspring this summer then sailing might be it. Pick a reputable, RYA recognised sailing school and you’ll be well away.
