Whilst September can dish up good weather (for those after an extension of summer) October is the gem month windsurfers and kiters focus on. The water’s still warm and low pressure weather systems have had chance to start spinning proper. For wind heads it can be golden time.
This morning (Sept 26, 2022) is blustery across much of the UK. There’s no question the air temperature has dropped – as we mentioned was going to happen in a previous blog post. Anyone entering the brine will need additional rubber. So get in touch to sort out your new wetsuit.
Eyes on the prize.
Keeping a keen eye on conditions the rest of this week looks to be fine and dandy for scoring windsurfing sessions. It’s not proper gale force storm type conditions but there’ll be some blow on offer for those who can. Further ahead is where it starts to look even more interesting. Especially if you like strong wind.
As it stands there’s a signal for storm activity around the end of next week. Low pressure will accelerate as it meets the Jet Stream and potentially rev up the wind considerably. You can see this with the graphic below.
With the Jet Stream being overhead the UK it acts as a funnel for low pressure helping to drive them towards us rather than if it were in a different position and deflecting storms. And (understandably) whilst a little vague the Met Office long range weather does concur with this thinking. See below.
Friday 30 Sep – Sunday 9 Oct
A large area of rain is likely to start in the west early on Friday, then spread eastwards to affect all areas by evening. Clearer weather is expected to follow, albeit with fresh winds and showers at times. Strong winds or gales are possible in the north. The unsettled regime is then expected to continue dominating the UK weather. Showers or longer periods of rain are likely for most parts of the country, with the highest rainfall expected in the west and northwest. Winds may become strong at times, most likely in the northwest. A shift towards more settled weather could possibly begin at the end of this period. Temperatures rather cold at first, then trending close to average.
Windsurfing kit sort out.
From a windsurfing point of view then it’s all eyes on the prize. In the short term, there should be a few sessions to score with even better conditions later in the period. And with that in mind you’ll need to have your ‘weapons’ at the ready.
NCW can sort you out with Tahe Techno windsurf boards and Nautix windsurf sails. We’re also able to source windsurfing accessories such as booms, masts, UJs, harness lines and so on. Have a look at NCW’s windsurfing sesction here. And if you have any questions about this kit get in touch.
Now, bring on the wind!
