We’re already seeing it at beaches close to NCW’s HQ. Lots of peeps heading down to frolic and flail in the South West’s surf. There’re also a good many learning to actually surf, rather than just playing. This is great and we think should definitely be encouraged. What might be worth considering, however, if you’re one who’s looking to learn to surf is getting a lesson.
Why are surfing lessons a good idea?
It’s a good question and one with plenty of answers. First off is you’ll have access to the right gear – specifically the surfboard. Learning on a hard board’s all well and good but there’s no substitute for a foamie. They’re simply the top of the pile when it comes to beginner friendly surfing tools. And actually, even seasoned riders tend to use them in some wave environments, which should tell you something.
Next up is you’ll be given all that essential knowledge in one hit to help you learn the art. If you’re going it alone then chances are you’ll be researching online and such. There’s simply no better way to glean info from in person though. And qualified surf instructors have plenty! Plus, upon having heard what you’re supposed to do it’ll be a case of going through land drills to prep your muscle memory for the brine proper.
Once in the drink a surf coach will keep you under their watchful eye. They’ll be able to instruct on how to improve your skills which can be put into practise straight away. Whilst relatively tricky at first surfing’s learning curve is steep and before long you’ll be up and on your feet.
Having a surf lesson or two means you’ll be safe. The instructor will take you to where’s best for learning and make sure you don’t get into trouble. All surf instructors are trained in surf rescue and can come to your aid should you require it. Unlike going it alone an organised surf lesson is as safe as you’ll ever be whilst playing in waves.
There’s usually a group of people, in the same situation as you, that makes having a surf lesson fun and less nerve racking than on your own. You may even make new friends – some going on to being your long time surf buddies. Camaraderie like this is gold and you’ll all be having laughs galore no doubt.
The above’s just some of the reasons why having a surf lesson (or series of lessons) is a good idea when starting off on your wave shredding journey. With UK beaches set to be busier than ever this year it’s a good way to keep safe, have fun and progress quickly.
