There’s nothing better (in our book) than a post surf beer (or beverage of choice) to toast the day’s proceedings and round off your session in style. We appreciate not everyone drinks alcohol, and we’re certainly not condoning taking things too far (don’t blame us for that headache in the morning), but suds after surf has been a staple part of wave riding diets since the sport’s inception.
Some drinks are intrinsically linked to sideways sliding so with that in mind we thought it’d be fun to list (and salute) the ones with ‘connections’ as it were. Here’s NCW’s top five, feel free to let us know yours.
Doom Bar
It wouldn’t be right if we didn’t mention our local brew. Named after the seabed sandy mound in the mouth of the Camel Estuary, close to NCW’s HQ, Doom Bar has gained a large following, and not just in and around Kernow. It’s not unusual to find patrons quaffing a pint of Doom in public houses far away from oceans.
Kona Longboard Lager
Brewed by the Kona Brewing Co we’re not sure you could get a more authentic surfer beer if you tried. Produced in Hawaii – the home of surfing if you missed that one! – Longboard Lager is an exceptionally smooth amber nectar that’s found adoring fans the world over. With its slightly spiced and malted notes we can see why.
SUP IPA
Swansea located The SUP Hut are onto a winner with this one we’re sure. Mat Barker-Smith (SUP Hut owner and UK SUP surf champ) teamed up with his local microbrewery after a successful stand up paddle board lesson to produce SUP IPA. Being a classic ale its nutty taste is enough to see off every paddle boarder’s night in style, ready for more sweeping action the following day.
Corona
Having found yourself in tropical climates, with a beating hot sun blazing down, after a fully immersive surf session you’ll most likely be gasping for the taste of something cold and silky sliding down your throat. Corona lager is found all over the place and while it might be cliché (some would say trendy) to guzzle a lime infused beverage, there’s no denying how refreshing it’ll taste as the sun sets.
Kona Big Wave brew
We couldn’t resist chucking another Kona Brewing Co tipple into this mix, after all, if their choice of suds doesn’t tantalise your surfing taste buds, however cliché it may be, then we don’t know what will. Unlike its spicy, malty sibling (see above) Big Wave is a light and balanced beer with a tropical aroma and a refreshing kick – sounds good to us.
There are loads more surfing ales, lagers and beers around. Why not hunt a few out for yourself this summer and pack then in your cool box for the ultimate surfing sundowner.
