If you’re into any kind of performance riding – be that surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing or stand up paddle boarding – then now’s the sweetest time of year. Of course, you may have done pretty good through summer but now’s the time we’re most likely to get a solid wave (regularly) and often blows as it were. Momma Nature generally revs up more in autumn and it’s a salivating prospect.
It’s worth pointing out, however, that if your performance riding craft of choice has been sitting in the garage during the last few months then now’s the time to get it out and give it a once over. You may even have multiple bits of equipment for this very type of surfing, windsurfing or SUPing we’re describing. In which case more than ever it’s worth checking and sorting any damage for wear and tear.
The biggest one for surfers is your leash. Whichever way you swing it leashes do take a hammering, even in the small stuff. And therefore they’re prone to snapping when you least expect. If that happens to be a big day then chances are your board’s going walkies and you’ll have a long swim. Definitely worth replacing even if you don’t think it’s required.
A new coat of wax and swapping worn traction pads are also good ideas. This’ll make your surfboard sweet smelling and look like new. Fins should be inspected as these can also pick up damage. And lastly, don’t forget to repair any dings, however insignificant they may appear. If you’re not a dab hand then there’re plenty of ding repairers about.
We mention surfboards above but any type of watersports equipment that’s been idle during summer needs some TLC BEFORE you go afloat. It goes without saying this is as much about safety as it is enjoyment. And whilst experienced riders may think they don’t need reminding it’s this very demographic that often forgets the basics.
NCW does carry some spares/accessories, such as surfboard wax. If we don’t have what you’re after then we’ll gladly point you in the right direction. Now, it’s time to have some proper fun!
