Travelling’s pretty tricky at the mo, that much is true. COVID has certainly put the kybosh on many an overseas surf trip – much to the dismay of many. And whilst we completely appreciate the lure of Tropical, palm fringed point breaks off the beaten track, where only boardies and bikinis are needed, there’s much to be said about searching your own backyard for surfing gold.
We’ve heard it a million times this summer, during the high season staycation period that was. People have rediscovered what it was that brought them to the coast. And out of towners have had a whale of a time stumbling across all those nooks and crannies that wouldn’t even be searched for during ‘normal’ years. In fact, we have it on good authority that a few locals have found new secret surfing spots which are a mere stone’s throw away from their usual haunts. Who’d a thunk it, ay?
But it doesn’t just apply to Cornwall, or even coastal only locations. A plethora of new venues await those who are prepared to go foraging. This is, after all, a rather large lump of rock we inhabit.
But for those of a surfing bent plenty of venues await your visit this autumn and winter. OK, the weather mightn’t always play ball, but we guarantee if you watch the forecast closely those windows of opportunity will open from time to time leaving you the ability to get on it. And of course, accommodation during the off season can be much cheaper than that of summer.
With a good wetsuit (we know a company who can supply this), a newly waxed surfboard, and willingness you can enjoy a winter surfing trip at home. Our advice, start scanning those dusty guide books you purchased a while back sitting at the back of the bookshelf. You’ll be glad you did…
